Place
of Interest
Turpan
is a magical city with the "high" of snow-covered peaks of
the Tianshan Mountains that are over 4,000 meters above sea
level, and the "low" of the Aydingkol Lake which is 154 meters
below the sea level - the second lowest point on the earth.
The Flaming Mountain is full of fairytale wonder, and the
scenic of Grape Valley is permeated with the fragrance of
fruit and melon. Then there is the desolately barren Gobi
Desert where no birds fly over but dotted with oases. Under
the surface is the Karez, a man-made wonder of irrigation
system in which water flows all the year round. This place
is a pleasant blend of "land of oases". It is a museum of
nature, but perfected by man.
-
Ancient City of Gaochang - ruins of an ancient
city which was built in the first century B.C. called Gaochangbi.
It used to be a garrison town and later became a key point
along the ancient Silk Road.
- Flaming
Mountain - made famous in Journey to the West. Crust
movements and years of efflorescence fashion its unique
geological feature. When the sun's ray beat down in mid-afternoon,
the red rocks on the crisscross gullies and ravines reflect
and the heat is intense as if the hillsides were engulfed
by tongues of fire, hence the name.
- Grape
Gorge
- Lying at the base of the western end of Flaming Mountain
is a world of unique with vineyards and fruit trees - Grape
Valley.
- Emin
Minaret - one of the architectural gems of the Silk
Road. The adjoining mosque, the biggest mosque in Turpan,
has a beamed ceiling supported by simple wooden pillars
and a domed scared area. The hall in it can hold up 1000
people and serves as an important hive for religious Festivals.
- Karez
- ancient undergound irrigation system comprised of a series
of wells and linking underground channels that uses gravity
to bring ground water to the surface, usually far from the
source.
- Bazeklik
Thousand Buddha Caves - historical religious relics,
in the Uygur language Bezeklik means "place where there
are paintings". It used to be an important center for Buddhist
worship under the Xizhou Huigu government of Gaochang Kindom,
which built the royal temple of the King of Huigu at this
site.
