 8-Day Silk Road Highlights: Xian/Dunhuang/Urumqi/Turpan

Dunhuang

A hotel staff will show you around and introduce those wonders of this culture hotel. Visit the world-renowned Mogao Caves – the largest and richest ancient art treasure in the world. Onward to the Brick Murals of Western Jin Tomb.  Then visit the Dunhung Market. After dinner, enjoy Dunhuang dance performance.

Dunhuang – Turpan 

By train about 10 hours

Start the day in style with a camel ride from hotel to the Mingsha Hill, in time to view the spectacular sunrise over the endless dunes (weather permitting).  Enjoy a full breakfast of eggs, croissants and coffee served against a backdrop of yellow dunes on one side and green oasis on the other. Then visit the Crescent Moon Spring.  After lunch, visit the Yangguan Pass, south-west of Dunhuang with eroded Han Dynasty beacon towers. Transfer to the Train Station (2 hours) followed by an overnight train journey to Turpan.

Turpan

On arrival to Turpan, transfer to the hotel for breakfast and rest. After lunch, visit the Emin Minaret, a typical Uygur architecture; the Karez Well – an amazing irrigation system which made Turpan a rich oasis. Be a guest of a Uygur family. Then visit the Ancient City of Jiaohe.  Dinner will be served with a whole-roasted lamb at hotel. After dinner, enjoy a Uygur dance performance.

Turpan – Urumqi      Approx. 2.5 hours coach

Drive past the Flaming Mountain, made famous by the story of the Monkey King. Visit the Tuyu Valley which consists of a Uygur Village and Holy Tombs.  Then onwards to the  Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves. Lunch will be served with a spicy chicken in Hui style. Travel to Urumqi – the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.  Enjoy souvenirs shopping at the International Grand Bazaar.

Urumqi – Xian            Approx. 3 hours flight

Cruise around the Heavenly Lake which is surrounded by alpine meadows and rugged snow-capped mountains densely covered in fir, pine and cypress.  After lunch, visit the Xinjiang Regional Museum with exhibits on archaeological treasures from the Silk Road including 3000-year-old mummies. Then visit the carpet factory. Take a flight to Xian. Visit the Drum Tower Square. At night, enjoy a dumpling dinner, specialty of Xian.

Xian –  Hong Kong   Approx. 2.5 hours flight

Take a flight to Shanghai. Then visit a famous watertown – Xitang. It is known for its bridges, lanes, and corridors. Afterwards drive directly to a historical city – Suzhou.

Take a boat ride to visit one of the World Heritage sites, the Humble Administrator's Garden. Onward to the newly opened Suzhou Museum which is designed by a world famed architect Mr. I. M. Pei.  After lunch, visit the Kunqu Museum and the Hanshan Temple After dinner, shop for your favourite souvenirs at Guan Qian Street.

Suzhou 

 

 

 

Visit the Lion Grove Garden which is famous for its artificial hills accumulated by the exquisite and skillfully shaped stones from the Tai Lake.  Then visit the Suzhou Lanliyuan Embroidery Institute. After lunch, visit the Tiger Hill, known as the first historical monument in the Wu region. Then visit Shantang Street.

Suzhou / Shanghai

by Coach 

 

Shanghai / Hong Kong Approx. 2.5 hrs flight

Drive to Shanghai. Enjoy city tour to the Bund, the former foreign settlement, ranged along with imposing buildings of the colonial period.   Then visit the Yuyuan Garden and the Old Town. After lunch, get an insight into this fast growing city by visiting Xintiandi, an urban attraction imbued with the city's history. Take an evening flight back to Hong Kong.                         (B & L)
