Culture Hotel - Lusongyuan Hotel, Beijing

Lusongyuan
Hotel
is a traditional compound of quadrangle composing of 5 courtyards. It lies at the centre of the ancient city, in an old styled "hutong" (Mongolian for water well) in the eastern part of the city. Hutongs and quadrangles are typical Beijing architectural structures. Hutongs are ancient styled lanes unique in Beijing while quadrangles are the main structures inside hutongs.

Cusi: Noble Rabbit

Lusongyuan Hotel witnessed the history and legends of Beijing.  The hotel building is famous for its imperial living taste of the Qing Dynasty with a history of nearly 170 years. The original owner of this large private house was the Grand General Sengge Rinchen, who invested in building this typical quadrangle courtyard and lived here while he carried out top official duties, such as defense minister.

General Sengge Rinchen played a vital role in the military history in the mid 19th century of China (Qing Dynasty). In 1853, he was entitled Prince by Emperor Dao Guang for his magnificent victory against Tai Ping Tian Guo, which was the greatest peasant uprising in 18th century of China. In 1859, he defeated the united fleet of U.K and France. General Sengge Rinchen died in battle when his troops were sieged by another large-scale peasant uprising called Nian Jun in 1865. Recorded historically that General Sengge Rinchen was so famous for his valiant, natural, and sincere manner. He was regarded as "the Great Wall" of the country by the Qing court.

In the past, the complex was largely kept out of sight by civilian residences. Today, its various parts are used by a government department, a school and civilians as their residences.

As an integrated part of former General Sengge Rinchen's residence, which is listed as a prior antiquity to special safekeeping of the government of China, Lusongyuan Hotel has become the only typical accommodation where you may enjoy the fantastic taste of the imperial living of the Qing Dynasty in China.

When you stay at Lusongyuan Hotel, feel free to bring home the hotel booklet which is placed on the desk of the guestroom.  It introduces the historical background and architectural features of Lusongyuan Hotel, a traditional compound of quadrangle composing of 5 courtyards, and the story of old hutongs in Beijing. Lusongyuan Hotel Outlook

Thank you very much. This was a very pleasant stay. Everything was excellent (except perhaps the restaurant, good but not at the standard of the hotel).

My friend Kurt and I traveled in China for a month.  While in Beijing we stayed at The Lu Song Yuan Hotel for 5 nights.  It was our favorite hotel.  Our stay was made perfect because of the attentive care from Mr. Law, the manager, and all the staff.  Everyone was helpful and friendly.  On my birthday, which occurred while I was there, the staff surprised me with a delicious birthday cake with candles.  We were especially fond of the delightful young woman who works in the restaurant. Thank you for a wonderful time in Beijing.  I will always recommend your hotel.

Just back home, I want to tell you all went perfectly well. We still don't know which of your two hotels in Beijing and Suzhou we liked most.
Both were perfect and we have been extremely well received and lodged.
Will definitely recommend them to friends planning to travel to China, all the more so that your Suzhou hotel is not yet mentioned in the travel guides, but I will mention it to the Routard and Lonely Planet people so they include it in their next issues.
Thanks also Helen for the train reservation, all went smoothly for us with the Beijing-Shanghai trip.

All in all we loved China and are surely going to return and visit other regions in the coming years.
Will of course be in touch with you when that happens.

Meanwhile, thanks again for all your help, cooperation and friendliness,

Sincerely,
Rudolf and Cecile Hagnauer

Please tell the staff how much we enjoyed our stay at your excellent hotel. Everyone went out of their way to help us. When we needed directions or information, they called various places to find what we wanted or wrote out street directions for taxi drivers. When we didn't like our room, they changed us to another room and made arrangements so the switch would not interrupt our day. They were always helpful and friendly, and their command of English was excellent. (Sadly, we don't know Chinese.)

Thank you again.

Thank you for your note following up.  My husband Chris and I had an AMAZING stay at the hotel!  The staff was absolutely wonderful as was the food and restaurant.  Whenever we return to Beijing we will definitely stay at the Lu Song Yuan again.  It is quite a gem!   I think the only issue we had was the beds were somewhat uncomfortable but again overall an EXCELLENT experience and I look forward to staying there again in the future.

Thank you,

It was great, and we really enjoyed our stay.  I do think that I'll stay there in the future.

Two things that could be improved are:  i) the reliability of the Internet connection in the rooms, and ii) the directions/map on the cards that we can show to taxi drivers.  It was hard, sometimes, to find a taxi driver that knew where to go.  Many refused to even try to find it.

Regards,
Dustin

We had a marvelous time at your Lu Song Yuan Hotel! The staff was very nice and efficient! The hotel enriched our visit to Beijing so much that it made the journey one of the best we have made!

We are planning to go to Suzhou next year to stay at your Pingjiang Lodge. We like so much more these kind of special small hotels than big modern ones that are exactly the same all over the world. We would also like to stay for a couple of days in Hangzhou. It would be lovely if you could recommend us a hotel similar to yours in that city!

Best regards!

my stay in the Beijing Lu Song Yuan Hotel was great! Just the hotel itself is so nice and the people working there are so very friendly, all this made my stay in Beijing an unbelievable great experience. And for sure I will recommend the hotel to everyone I know who will stay in Beijing. It was the best one I got to know on my tour through China!
Thanks again!

I like very much this hotel: well located, nice place and nice people. One think is the size of the rooms: the Standard size is small for 2 people and you should recommend booking the larger one for 2.

Thanks so much for your prompt attention to our refund. We loved the hotel as well as the tour. The hotel was very comfortable and in a great location. Everything went smoothly. We thank you too for your good service. We will be happy to recommend both the hotel and tour to anyone we know who travels to China.

24 May 2006

We had a lovely stay in the Beijing Lu Song Yuan Hotel Hotel. It is in an ideal location. The restaurant was great and the rooms were more than adequate. Although the hotel is not specifically designed for families i.e. having no adjoining rooms my three children (aged 7, 9 and 11), husband and I found it more than suitable and would not hesitate to stay there again. We enjoyed the courtyards and my children enjoyed playing in the local Exercise playground at the end of the road.
Although the staff at reception were very helpful in writing our destinations for us in Chinese characters to give to the taxi drivers, it would be a useful benefit for guests if available at the reception there were business card sized names of typical tourist attractions listing on individual cards the Western name, the locally known name and the name written in Chinese characters also information such as the address and opening hours.
Thanks Again.

1: Our ride from the airport was fast, efficient and well worth the money. The driver was courteous and safe.
2: Check-in was prompt and expedient.
3: My double room was too small for two people. Nowhere to store our clothes or leave our suitcases. We had to upgrade to a larger room at an extra expense.
4: Breakfast buffet was sufficient but hot items were not kept warm by separate burners. We had to ask the staff to light burners under the food trays to keep it warm.
5: Hot water was an issue. Sometimes the bath water had to be left running for quite a while before any hot water would arrive. The excuse was the distance from the boiler to the room... or repairs to the boiler.
6: Desk staff was very helpful in directions, especially writing destinations out in Chinese to show to cab drivers.
7: Internet access was fast, readily available and most affordable.
8: Our bill was presented quickly and accurately.
9: The transfer to the airport was the same as our arrival. Fast, courteous and safe.
10: Location was outstanding. Walking the hutongs really made us feel a part of the Chinese culture. We felt safe and welcomed.
On a scale of 1-10 I would rate a 7 and wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel to another traveler.

We enjoyed our stay at the Lu Song Yuan Hotel. Our rooms were a little small so we had to upgrade. Not a problem. The staff was very helpful. The transfer to and from the airport was very welcome. The location of the hotel in the hutong was excellent. We ate from street vendors. We just saw where everybody else was eating and followed the crowd. I would certainly recommend the hotel.
Hope you have a wonderful holiday.
