The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel was founded in 1995. Situated against the backdrop of the picturesque Mingsha Sand Dunes in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, the hotel captures the spirit of the Tang Dynasty with its unique architectural design - the large rooftops and winding corridors of the Han and Tang dynasties; the typical enclosed courtyard style design and mud walls of the northwestern part of China; and the replica of the late Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties furniture. All these work together to recapture the flavour of a bygone era with their simplicity and use of natural building materials.

Once a prosperous trading centre along the Silk Road and with a history of more than 2,000 years, Dunhuang played a crucial role in ancient China. Its relics and ancient artifacts have made the ancient city become one of the well-known tourist spots in China.
The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel is situated in Dunhuang city in Gansu Province of China. The hotel provides convenient access to the major scenic spots such as Mogao Grottoes and Mingsha Sand Dunes. The hotel is located 3 kilometres south of Dunhuang's city centre, a convenient 20 minutes' drive from the airport, and 30 minutes to the stunning Mogao Grottoes by car. Mogao Grottoes
The World-renowned Mogao Grottoes, also known as Caves of a Thousand Buddhas, is the largest and richest ancient art treasure in the World. It is a treasure trove of Buddhist manuscripts, wall paintings, statuary, and artworks including architectural designs, sculptures and murals. With 492 caves, the Mogao Grottoes was put in the "World Heritages" by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1987.
Mingsha Sand Dunes and Crescent Moon Lake
Right behind the Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel, Mingsha Sand Dunes and Crescent are known as famous natural wonders. As its name implies in Chinese, Mingsha Sand Dunes means the deafening sound of the moving sands made when the wind sweeps across them. It is composed of many sand dunes and it covers 40 km from east to west and 20 km from south to north. The small and mysterious natural masterpiece Crescent Moon Lake is shaped clearly by the sand dunes. You can enjoy steep climbing the Mingsha Sand Dunes and sliding down from the top. You can also take a slow riding into the sand dunes on camelback.
Yumenguan and Yangguan Passes
Once important gateways to Central Asia, India and Europe, the two grand Han-dynasty gates are about 68 km apart. They are famous ancient tower ruins from where lots of relics were discovered. Yumenguan lies about 90 km northwest of Dunhuang while Yangguan, which is an ancient beacon tower, is about 70 km south of Dunhuang.
White Horse Pagoda (Bai Ma Ta)
A Kuchean monk, Kumarajiva, traveled with his gallant white steed from east along the Silk Road in AD384. However, the white deed died in Dunhuang. Kumarajiva built the White Horse Pagoda to commemorate his holly steed.

We had a fabulous experience in Dunhuang. We learned that less than 3% of the visitors are American yet more should go to experience the richness of the area. Truthfully, it was The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel website and link to your tours that piqued our interests to visit. As seasoned, independent travelers who have never utilized a tour company, we were immensely gratefully that we chose you to coordinate our trip to Dunhuang. The customized 4-day tour with a private driver and English speaking guide allowed us to enjoy the incredible historical sites, vast Gobi desert ventures, fun camel ride and authentic Chinese culture, cuisine and life, which we would never have experienced on our own. Our guide, Ms Fan, was knowledgeable, compassionate, friendly, and flexible to adapt each day to best suit our interests and desired activities. She was absolutely fantastic, and we give her five stars for her extraordinary skills as a guide. Mr Lee, our driver, was always reliable and a safe driver. Thank you for employing the best people to serve your clients. Also a note of acknowledgement for the wonderful stay at The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel. Our suite was beautifully decorated, the beds were very warm and comfortable, and the staff were always gracious and helpful. Eric Huang, Assistant Manager, was definitely a key resource person and we appreciated his help. We dined at the Chinese Restaurant because Western foods we could eat at home. All the meals were attractively presented and tasted outstanding. Hot Pot was a favorite dining experience. We traveled to China solely to visit Dunhuang, to stay 6 days at your hotel, and to take the 4-day personalized tour. Standing on the roof top cafe to enjoy the sand dunes and walking around the large hotel grounds are memorable experiences. We were never disappointed, and would highly recommend the hotel and your tour services to others traveling to Dunhuang. We will definitely share our experiences with family and friends, and hope more travelers will make the journey to Dunhuang.
Again, many thanks to all the fine staff who made our trip memorable.

We stayed at the Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel during June 2012.
The hotel is a beautiful building and fantastic to explore. Even better the staff are warm and friendly, and everyone we dealt with was very helpful. I was surprised at how many staff spoke such excellent English.
Located near the Crescent Moon Lake as well as being only a short ride to town, it is well located. To town is only 10rmb by taxi, however the hotel has a shuttle during the evenings that runs every half hour too. The Dunhuang Night market is great to explore and we loved some of the local restaurants.
To celebrate my birthday, my wife and I had a great meal of local specialities in one of the hotel’s Chinese restaurants. The service and presentation was excellent, and we really enjoyed it. It was great value.
Our room was both comfortable and well-appointed and we were more than happy with it. We also enjoyed the roof top garden for lunch and drinks. The hotel offers a great breakfast, also on the roof, and this was one of the better breakfasts I have had in China in the many months and visits I have made there.
I totally recommend The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel to anyone coming to Dunhuang. I can’t wait to go back myself.

Very good stay. We will post on trip advisor.
We recommend that you put in a small pool in the courtyard. It gets very hot in the desert.

I am a history teacher and I recently stayed at your wonderful hotel -- from July 14-16 -- with a group of teachers from the United States. We were travelling with the "EF," EDUCATION FIRST Tour Group. These days in your special hotel were my favorite part of our trip to China. Your hotel staff was kind to let us hold a meeting in your reception area.
…we traveled to Dunhuang in mid July with a group of 25 fellow teachers from several different states in the U.S. She writes, "For me, and many others in our group, Dunhuang was the high point of our study tour. All members of the group found The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel to be of lovely architectural design, with a beautiful lobby featuring a lofty ceiling and a large, dramatic historical mural. We commented that the designer of the hotel took a lot of care to craft such an attractive yet usable and practical structure. The layout resembles that of a palace complex, with several buildings and subsections framed in light colored wood that seems at home in the desert surroundings. The top floor of the main building features a comfortable indoor dining area fronted by a good-sized wooden deck overlooking the desert dunes. The deck is shaded in the morning when breakfast is served, and the view is breathtaking. Teachers in the group were awestruck to actually be in Dunhuang on the edge of the Gobi, which to some had been just dots on a map before this visit. Early risers could view a lovely sunrise, and those who could stay awakee until 9:30 p.m. were treated to a gorgeous sunset over the dunes.
Our adventurous group opted to go on a camel ride into the dunes in the high, dry heat, and rode on to lovely Crescent Lake. The ride was bumpy but great fun. On another day we went to view the nearby Mogao Grottos - "the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas" - which house beautiful Buddhist shrines with statuary, paintings, and inscriptions from the Tang Dynasty. We were also able to visit Dunhuang High School and meet with several of the teachers and students. We were impressed by the students' poise and English language skills. After their last day of final examinations, they generously showed us around their large, impressive campus. Every evening we returned to the cool and comfort of the spacious, welcoming Silk Road unhuang Hotel. This was the trip of a lifetime and we want to thank the skilled and helpful staff of the hotel, the teachers and students of Dunhuang High School, and also the kind Mayor of Dunhuang, who helped make our trip to the school so meaningful and special. Many thanks to the people of Dunhuang!"

I stayed at the hotel last summer. It was a very positive experience for me. I loved sunrise on the roof and breakfast overlooking the dunes. The staff were friendly, and I was able to book a private tour into the desert which was so informative and wonderful. There is so much to see and do in Dunhuang. I recommend a visit to there and your hotel to everyone I speak to about my vacation.

We found your hotel to be an extraordinarily elegant accommodation with a wonderful staff. Eric, one of the managers, helped us every day and we felt very much at home because of his kindness. We were able to enjoy all of the cultural sites--the Magao Caves, the Dunes, and the Dunhuang Museum and night market. The food was wonderful. The room was beautiful. We love your hotel and hope that we will soon be able to visit again.

I did want to email and say that we had a wonderful stay at the Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel. We have great memories, the rooms we had were excellent and the service was also exceptional which included utilising the hotel service to go to the Mogao Caves and the 1000 Buddha caves. The staff were friendly and helpful and it was a wonderful way to finish our trip in China.
Thank you again for your help in booking the accommodation as well, as it helped to deal direct with the Hotel chain and to know that the reservations were made and that there would be no issues when arriving at the Hotel and checking in.
I would certainly recommend to my family, friends and others to stay at the above hotel or other Silk Road hotels.
Kind Regards,

Thanks for your greeting.
Your hotel in Dunhuang is marvelous. I like so much the Chinese style decoration of my room. We had very enjoyable 2days over in Dunhuang with kindness servicing from your colleagues. They are the most friendly people of hotel I met in this trip. My friends and I will recommend our friends: where should stay in your hotel at Dunhuang although the price is bit higher than the others. Please send my thankful to your May Lee for her good recommendation to me.
