Pingjiang Lodgeis a unique Culture Hotel that has character and soul. Located in the Suzhou Pingjiang District, the Lodge is transformed from Suzhou ancient complex of houses that contains different compounds of courtyards and rooms. The main hall of the Lodge was once the residence of the Fang Family in the Ming Dynasty, while the restaurant/MICE complex "Manor by the Bridge" (Shanfang) was once the residence of the Dong Family.
Cusi: Sacred Fox
Constructed in the old Suzhou style in the middle era of the Ming Dynasty, the Main Hall of Pingjiang Lodge has a history of more than 450 years and it is the oldest part of the complex. It has been inherited for 7 generations and has preserved relics dating back to the Ming, Qing, Republic of China and the Cultural Revolution periods. A wall near the main lobby with some red-painted words “Quotations from Chairman Mao” was painted by the Red Guards in the Cultural Revolution. The Lodge preserves “fine, detail, delicacy and beauty” in Chinese architectural style. Here, you can experience yourself up close to the “Xiao Qiao, Liu Shui, Ren Jia” (literally means “small bridges, flowing waters, residences”), a typical description of the landscape and classical aura of Suzhou.
Getting into the Pingjiang Lodge is just like traveling back in time. When you stroll down, you will find pieces of relics dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911), and also the Cultural Revolution (1966 – 1976). The traditional ambience also allows you to experience the Chinese culture to its fullest. Take your time to play the stone piano (Qin), Chinese Chess and Checker (Qi), as well as Chinese Brushes and Black Ink Bar for calligraphy (Shu) and painting (Hua) at the lobby lounge where local tea is served.
The décor of the guest rooms preserves the indigenousness of the building and captivates the cultural aura of Suzhou. There are 52 rooms altogether and they are arrayed within 11 yards, such as Tao Yuan ("Peach Blossom Yard") and Zhu Yuan ("Bamboo Yard"). They are designed to blend with local traditions that include cloistered gardens, wooden pillars and tiled roofs, providing a cozy and tranquil environment for guests to experience the lifestyle of the ancient Suzhou.
When you stay at Pingjiang Lodge, feel free to bring home the hotel booklet which is placed on the desk of the guestroom. It introduces the historical background and architectural features of Pingjiang Lodge, a traditional complex that blends in gardens and waters, offering you a cozy environment to experience the rich cultural ambience of the garden city of Suzhou. Please click here to preview.
There are 51 guest rooms at the Pingjiang Lodge. They are arrayed within 11 yards that are named according to different Chinese landscape gardening, such as Bamboo Yard, Apricot Yard and Pine Yard. Suzhou is a historical city in China. Some people call it the "Venice in the Orient" because of the canals, stone bridges and the environment in which the local people live. Suzhou gardens are the symbol of the buildings in Jiangnan. They are famous for their lakes and hills which are skillfully organized to form beautiful gardens. The traditional specialties in Suzhou are jasmine tea, Su-taste cakes, sandal fans, Song brocade, lacquer ware, silk embroidery and drawn work.
The Humble Administrator's Garden
The Humble Administrator's Garden, located at the northeast street of Suzhou City, is the biggest garden of Suzhou City, which has won the fame of "Reputed Garden in the South of China" and "Cream Among the Gardens". It takes 10mins drive from the Lodge.
The Lion Grove Garden
The Lion Grove Garden lies along the Suzhou Garden Boulevard. It takes 10 minutes drive from our Lodge. There are strange stones resembling lions in the garden, hence the Lion Grove Garden, famous for its artificial hills accumulated by the exquisite and skillfully shaped stones from the Tai Lake.
Surging Waves Pavilion
This classical garden was built in the Five Dynasties (907-960), purchased and named by a poet Su Shunqin in 1044 during the Song Dynasty.
Lingering Garden
Lingering Garden covers an area of 23,310 square meters, is the best garden in Suzhou as well as being one of the four most famous gardens in China. It is renowned for the artistic way in which the spaces between various kinds of architectural forms are dealt with.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for being so welcoming to us, Jen Yeh and Susan Fillin-Yeh, when we stayed at the Pingjiang Lodge, 8-18 December, 2012. Our room was in the building across the street from the main hotel entrance. May we tell you again how much we enjoyed the traditional architecture and furnishings, and the view from our window onto the beautiful Pingjiang Canal. Your hotel is very special.
The hotel staff was very congenial; They even searched online for information on particular, tasty vegetable which had been unfamiliar to us, called "four winged bean."
We have recommended the Pingjiang Lodge to others.
Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Jen Yeh and Susan Fillin-Yeh

We enjoyed our stay in Suzhou at Pingjiang Lodge very much. A few comments follow:
Small problems:
The driver who picked us up at Shanghai Pudong airport was waiting for us at the International Arrivals area instead of Domestic, so it took about 45 minutes to find him.
Had some problems with English being understood at the hotel front desk
Front desk would not call us a taxi, saying they wouldn't come down the alley
Breakfast was very late on our first morning
(None of these was a big issue and did not detract much from our good overall experience)
Positives:
I called the front desk from Pudong airport and the person there was very helpful in helping us find the driver
Our room was fantastic
Restaurant food was very good
Front desk was helpful in booking us a limo to Suzhou North train station
I really enjoy my stay in Ping Jian Lodge from the first warm welcome at my arrival to the last minute when i left.
Location is perfect, lobby and rooms style and furniture lovely, breakfast food excellent.
I wish also underline the good english and professionalism of the staff, far better than what i found in 5 stars hotel like the Shangri-La for example.
With best regards
Micheline Baussard

Just back home, I want to tell you all went perfectly well. We still don't know which of your two hotels in Beijing and Suzhou we liked most.
Both were perfect and we have been extremely well received and lodged.
Will definitely recommend them to friends planning to travel to China, all the more so that your Suzhou hotel is not yet mentioned in the travel guides, but I will mention it to the Routard and Lonely Planet people so they include it in their next issues.
Thanks also Helen for the train reservation, all went smoothly for us with the Beijing-Shanghai trip.
All in all we loved China and are surely going to return and visit other regions in the coming years.
Will of course be in touch with you when that happens.
Meanwhile, thanks again for all your help, cooperation and friendliness,
Sincerely,
Rudolf and Cecile Hagnauer

Weve had a nice trip at Suzhou and the Pingjiang Lodge. Its really impressive to live at an antique courtyard house so well preserved. I would stay at the Lodge again when I go to Suzhou next time.
Im an architect and interested in Chinese architecture. As a support to the good effort of preserving old building, Im writing an article to be posted up at local newspaper. Will let you have a copy then.
One minor point:
We booked a deluxe room with extra bed. I suggest the Lodge may prepare bathroom accessories, tea bags and etc for three guests instead of two.

Helen Leung

I could not reply you earlier since we have been travelling in Europe after our China trip! We had a wonderful experience a the Suzhou Pingjiang Lodge, we simply loved the place, your boss has done a very good job to restore the old house to its previous glory, the staff was very attentive, especially the Manager who was in charge of the hotel, I am terribly sorry that I did not get his name, he was extremely helpful, he was the only person in the hotel could answer my question of the brand new IM Pei Museum in Suzhou! There was also a certain Mr. Chin Da Min gave us a lot useful information as well, even we did not have good weather but the atmosphere was warm at your hotel! My husband took a lot of pictures of the hotel, as soon as we sort them out, I shall send you some, because they are very beautiful, and really show the best of your hotel. We have highly told all our friends about your hotel, so I hope you will continue with the same spirit and service of the hotel.
Just a small remark about your breakfast, I think it can be improved.
We should return to China next April for another conference in Beijing and Shanghai, I look forward to trying out the Beijing experience with your hotel.
Regards,
Vanessa

We had great fun in Suzhou and liked the hotel. It was a very tranquil and authentic setting and staff were lovely.
We did not really have any criticism just a minor point of a choice of muesli/cereal for breakfast though we appreciated that the restaurant is not yet functioning and staff were doing best they could and otherwise breakfast was fine.
Best regards
Louise
