Culture Hotel - Xidi Travel Lodge, Huangshan

2014 Award of Excellence

Xidi Travel Lodge
is located in the Xidi Village, UNESCO World Heritage famed for peach blossom and known as one of the well-preserved hamlets of its kind in China.

Xidi Travel Lodge is a cultural property which was transformed from several southern Anhui residential homes.  It consists of six independent units that capture different local architectural styles combining the south China traditional green garden landscape.
Cusi: Short Tail Monkey
The Lodge has preserved its traditional Ancestral Halls, Commemorative Arch, “horse head” walls and built with the state-green shingle to retain the accent of southern Anhui architecture and complete your cultural experiences. When you enter the Xidi Travel Lodge, the living museum of Ming/Qing residential houses, you will soak up the cultural aura of southern Anhui.

Xidi served as the “caravanserai” in ancient times. The descendants of the Li imperial clan of the Tang Dynasty were relocated to Wuyuan (now in Jiangxi Province) and subsequently extended to Xidi. They changed their names to “Hu” and highly valued Confucian culture.  They honoured the Confucian virtues in their daily life, from developing a village, building a house, to handling their daily affairs.  In the Ming Dynasty, their devotion to Confucian studies made it a unique culture in the hamlet and Xidi became one of the founding places of the “Hui culture”, leaving quite a few great names in history.

After 1949, Mingjing Ancestral Hall (now Mingjing Garden), built in the Ming Dynasty, became a granary and the office of the township government.  In 2007, it underwent a transformation featuring two approaches: “restored to the original form” and “rebuilt to the original form”.  Historic relics preserved include two ancient Hui-style structures which were originally part of the Ancestral Hall, the two-storey Huatings (exterior halls) built in the period of the Republic of China (formerly Ying Tianqi Block Print Museum), and the building complex housing the township government office.  As part of the conservation program, the original building complex has been preserved, and part of the pseudo-classic architectures has been restored and enlarged.  Finally, with the installation of modern facilities, Xidi Travel Lodge comes to the current structure.

A model displayed at the lobby of Xidi Travel Lodge shows the original appearance of Mingjing Ancestral Hall.   Other exhibits include part of the Hu clan's genealogy, written records of the construction of the Hall, and materials related to the conservation program under which the Hall was transformed into the Xidi Travel Lodge.

When you stay at Xidi Travel Lodge, feel free to bring home the hotel booklet which is placed on the desk of the guestroom.  It introduces the architectural style of the Lodge lobby, rebuilt from the ancient Hui-style Mingjing Ancestral Hall.  It also reveals some interesting stories of the region, including the Xidi Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Xidi Travel Lodge outlook

Please send your comments to webmaster@the-silk-road.com .

Yesterday I returned to Germany from my five weeks voyage to China. During this voyage with my wife and my sister I stayed for several days in Huangshan hotels. Among these hotels we spent one night in the Xidi Travel Lodge, too. Despite the very short time we spent there, we received a truly excellent service and in a very personal way. Looking now back on our experiences with hotels in China – among them are the Kempinski in Beijing, the Five Seasons in Guangzhou and the Harbour Grand Kowloon in Hong Kong -, this service in your hotel was definitely the most personal one, which we have received. Therefore, I kindly ask you to convey our best thanks to its Manager, Mr. Josephe Schan, for his extraordinary hospitality.

With best regards
