Culture Hotel - Tunxi Lodge, Huangshan

Tunxi Lodge is located in the famous Old Street (“Lao” street in Mandarin) in Tunxi, a beautiful ancient town in Anhui Province. The Tunxi Old Street has a history of more than 700 years which can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It was once a commercial street where merchants from Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, and Fujian provinces jostled and conducted businesses.

Cusi: Hui Camel

The street is known as the living "Riverside Scene at the Qingming Festival", a famous Chinese painting. Today, the street is flanked by hundreds of old yet well-preserved shops, evoking a bygone era of buildings dating back to the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties. These shops, simple and elegant, adopt a special operational layout that is still preserved today in Tunxi: the front part of the shop for business while the back for living.

Tunxi Lodge, a dual-building complex of which no.15 (the main building) has 3 storeys while no.17 (the annex building) has 4 storeys, preserves the indigenous Huizhou architectural style. Its white walls, black-tiled roofs with horse-head eaves and traditional carvings blend in the simple yet clean décor, allowing you to have a real touch of the local history and lifestyle.

Tunxi Lodge’s classical environment and friendly service will enlighten your trip to Huangshan. Whether you are enjoying a cup of coffee at the Café & Bar in Tunxi Lodge or strolling along the Tunxi Old Street, you will be pampered by the historical and cozy ambience of this charming ancient town.

When you stay at Tunxi Lodge, feel free to bring home the hotel booklet which is placed on the desk of the guestroom.  It introduces the Huizhou architectural style of Tunxi Lodge and the history of the region, where you may explore some interesting stories up-close.  Please click here to preview.

  • Mt. Huangshan
Also known as “Yellow Mountain, the beauty of Mt. Huangshan lies in its "four wonders": pine trees with shapely foliage, rocks in different images, an ocean of clouds, and hot springs.  In 1990, Huangshan was listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.  It is one of the renowned tourist destinations both in China and worldwide.
  • Xidi & Hong Village
Located near the Yixian County in Huangshan, Xidi and Hong Village were listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2000. These two villages are the most representatives of local-style residences in southern Anhui Province and they are regarded as “Living Dwelling Museum of Ming and Qing dynasties”.  All the buildings follow the local architectural style, with exquisite carvings which are magnificent symbols of the time.
  • Tangyue Memorial Archways ( “Tangyue Paifang” in Mandarin)
Tangyue Memorial Archways, a complex of seven arches, were built in honor of the merits and virtues of the Bao family.  These seven archways represent traditional values and stand in the main street of Tangyue Village in order of “loyalty, filial piety, chastity and justice”.  Three were built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and the other four in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).  It is the biggest existing and best-preserved complex of arches in Anhui Province.
  • The Bao Family Garden
Adjacent to the Tangyue Memorial Archways, the Bao Family Garden was originally a private garden of the businessman and Officer Bao Qiyun in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).  The garden is considered a masterpiece of Hui style private garden and bonsai works.  It is equally famous as the Humble Administrator’s Garden of Suzhou and Liyuan garden of Wuxi, together gaining a reputation as “the three renowned private gardens in southern China”.
  • Huashan Mysterious Grottoes

Huashan Mysterious Grottoes, a combination of natural caves and rooms carved into the rock, lie in the east of Tunxi.  They are ruins of the ancient Huizhou Grottoes which form a beautiful scenery in a small hilly area.  Yet, when and why the grottoes were built is still unknown.

  • Former Residence of Cheng Dawei & the History Museum of Abacus
Cheng Dawei was a renowned mathematician from Ming Dynasty.  He is also known as a master of abacus.  His house remains some classic elements of Huizhou architectural style, including horse-head gables, black-tiled roofs and intricate woodcarvings.  The History Museum of Abacus is located at the Former Residence of Cheng Dawei, which displays different kinds of ancient abacus.

Very good location!  The Tunxi Old street is just outside the hotel.  Staff was friendly and helpful.  The western breakfast was better than I expected.

We stayed at Tunxi Lodge for 2 nights and we enjoyed our stay very much.  This is a special hotel with much local flavour and characteristics.  The room we booked was quite spacious.  We like this kind of boutique hotel and we'll recommend it to our friends.
